Discover Cairo
Cairo is a city of over 16 million people, the largest city in Africa. It is a complex blend of cultures and civilizations, each overlaid one on top of the other, going all the way back to the days of the Pharaohs. Today's Cairo was founded in the 10th century, and named 'Al Qahira' - or the 'Victorious One'. It was also called 'The Mother of the World'.
Set on the River Nile, it is today home to an amalgam of peoples - Bedouins from the desert, sophisticated businessmen, Islamic scholars from all over the world, and more. And they are reflected in the many different faces that Cairo has to show to the traveler, from the sophistication of downtown Cairo to the narrow, picturesque maze of alleyways that makes up Islamic Cairo.
