Not what it seems, The Rock Garden of Chandigarh is actually a 1,61,874 square metres park filled with sculptures made from recycled items. Built in secret, the park remained undiscovered for 18 years, until 1975, by which time it had grown into a vast labyrinth of interlinked courtyards punctuated with sculptures of people and animals.
Sukhna Lake is flanged by Chandigarh Golf Course and the Rock Garden of Chandigarh. Walkers can stroll and children can rollerskate along the promenade, while anglers catch fish and painters set up their canvases. A variety of watersports and boating can be enjoyed on Sukhna Lake. It is also the venue for numerous cultural festivals throughout the year.
This garden was established in the 17th century by the Patiala Dynasty and typifies many elements of traditional Indian garden design, with terraced lawns and charming palaces; from "Shish Mahal", a palace of glass, to "Hawa Mahal", a palace of air, "Rang Mahal", a painted palace and "Jal Mahal", a palace of water. To entertain the nobles, there was and still remains an open air theatre and a zoo.
This unmissable 4,04,686 square metres site was designed by Le Corbusier and features an emotive Open Hand Monument: a symbol of peace and reconciliation designed in response to the partition of India in 1947.
