Humayun’s Tomb was recognised as a UNESCO World Heritage Site in 1993. Started in 1565 but not completed until 1572, it is of particular cultural significance for being recognised as the first garden tomb in India. Humayun’s Tomb is believed to be the earliest example of Mughal architecture in India, and inspiration for the Taj Mahal in Agra.
India Gate is a magnificent sandstone memorial arch (42 metres high) engraved with the names of over 70,000 Indian soldiers who lost their lives in World War I. Standing tall and serene at one end of Kartavya Path, the memorial is a wonderful sight to behold from every aspect as you drive around the busy ring road that is India Gate Circle. Stand at India Gate looking down Kartavya Path and you will see the magnificent Rashtrapati Bhawan (the President’s House).
