Art, markets, parks, gardens, rainforest and a volcanic phenomenon await.
This beautiful National Park is home to most of Mauritius’ rainforest, a number of wild animal species and all of the island’s endemic birds. It covers almost seventy square kilometres and includes around sixty kilometres of walking trails; one of which leads to the summit of Black River Peak. At 828 metres, this is the island’s highest point and it commands spectacular views. There are also numerous zip line experiences, as well as quad biking within the park. It also features a suspended foot bridge, which at 750 metres long, is not for the faint hearted.
Chamarel’s seven coloured earths are a unique geological phenomenon of volcanic earth that never erodes; sand dunes composed of red, brown, violet, green, purple, blue and yellow particles that spontaneously separate and settle in layers. It is said that if you take a handful of the seven colours and mix them all together, they will naturally separate back into their different groups.
A revered crater lake and a place of Hindu pilgrimage, where beautiful temples dedicated to Lord Hanuman, Lord Shiva and the Goddess Lakshmi can be found. The statue of Lord Shiva is an awe inspiring 33 metres high. Legend has it that Ganga Talao appeared in a dream to a Hindu priest in Mauritius as a tributary of India’s sacred River Ganges.
Colonised throughout its history by the Dutch, French and British, the capital city of Port Louis has a diverse culture that is reflected in its arts, architecture, museums and markets. To see a fascinating cross section of Mauritian culture, you can visit the lively covered market, the 18th century French colonial Government House, the Natural History Museum, Jummah Mosque, St. James Cathedral, the Tamil Temple, Port Louis theatre and the Chinese Pagoda. Should you wish to pick up some souvenirs, the Caudan and Port Louis waterfronts make shopping a pleasurable and leisurely experience.
