Your voyage of discovery across 5,000 years of Egyptian history. s
Egypt's southernmost city, Aswan is located 240 kilometres along the River Nile from Luxor. At Aswan, the desert touches the banks of the Nile River and the waters are dotted with islands. Aswan was historically an important trading town and remains a bustling marketplace.
Deir El Madina.
This ancient Egyptian village was home to the artisans who worked on the tombs in the Valley of the Kings and presents one of the most complete examples of age old community life. Inhabited for almost four hundred years, extensive excavation work in contemporary times has enabled us to understand the social structures and interactions, working and living conditions of this working community; even to name many of the inhabitants and describe their daily interactions.
The temple of Esna is a magnificent structure of red sandstone, with a grand portico composed of six rows of four columns adorned with unique lotus leaf details. Inscriptions carved upon the temple walls give very specific instructions about the code of conduct expected from visitors. Not only are you required to wash your hands, but also to cut your finger and toe nails, remove all body hair and to have abstained from sexual relations for several days before entering this sacred space.
Karnak Temple lay buried under sand for more than 1,000 years before excavation work began in the mid 19th century. The huge task of restoring this five acre temple continues until today.
