This palatial mansion was commissioned in 1835 by Raja Rajendra Mullick, a wealthy Bengali aristocrat, and a part of it is still inhabited by his descendents. Constructed largely out of white marble, the house boasts an eclectic mix of architectural styles; from neoclassical pillars and traditional Bengali courtyards to roofed verandas inspired by Chinese pavilions. Mullick was an avid collector of all kinds of art and it would seem that his passion extended into the very essence of the Marble Palace. Inside, visitors will find valuable and celebrated paintings, sculptures, furniture and busts sharing space with random pieces of kitsch in a rare kind of egalitarian display that has to be seen to be believed.
