Mt Rinjani is said to be the home of the Goddess Anjani, it represents a spiritual and sacred link to the Sasak people of Lombok as well as the Balinese. The Myths says that Rinjani was created when monkeys playing with the moon, broke three pieces off and dropped them to earth. One piece became Mount Merapi in Java, one became Bali's Mount Angung and one Rinjani.
This still active volcano last erupting in 1995, is the largest in Indonesia and at 3726 meters it is the second highest peak. As you gain elevation the trail opens to spectacular vistas of the ocean and surrounding countryside. At 2900 meters the breathtaking views are simply spectacular. Scenes of Lombok's West Coast, the Crater Lake Segara Anak and Rinjani's new cone are dizzying.
