December and early January experience the first snowfall in Shimla, but January through February offers a more consistent blanket of snow.
Mashobra is higher and less visited than Shimla, so snowfall here tends to be a more peaceful and immersive experience in nature. With its toy train and ice rink, Shimla offers a livelier, more festive ambience.
Warm clothes, hats, scarves and gloves are a must. Waterproof walking boots and thermals are also advisable. Should you need extra layers, handmade, woollen Himachali attire can be purchased from Lakkar Bazaar in central Shimla.
