Indonesia is the largest archipelago in the world. Over 17,000 islands fall under the national banner. While Bali and Lombok remain two of the best places to visit in Indonesia, they also provide a convenient base for you to get off the beaten track and explore further afield.
Easily reached on an overnight flight from Bali, Raja Ampat is a collection of around 1,500 sparsely populated, rocky islands with lush jungle vegetation, blue lagoons and coral gardens. It is estimated that 75% of the world’s aquatic species can be found here. One of the least visited places on the planet, we highly recommend a side trip to Raja Ampat when you stay with us at The Oberoi Beach Resort, Bali.
Highlights:
A UNESCO Geopark around the same size as Bali, Belitung Island has a dramatic landscape dotted with granite boulders and pristine white sand beaches. We recommend you take a boat ride to see the smaller surrounding islands, or take a stroll around Belitung’s colourful harbour, replete with 19th century Dutch colonial architecture.
Highlights:
This small collection of islands is definitely worth exploring. Second only to Raja Ampat in terms of marine biodiversity, the coral reefs and underwater gardens nurture some of the world’s most endangered species. Please contact The Oberoi Beach Resort, Bali for further information and assistance booking transfers.
Highlights:
Wae Rebo village is defined by its unique, traditional Mbaru Niang houses. Tall, conical and thatched down to the ground, they each have five floors. The lowest floor is where the families reside. The top floor is reserved for the ancestors and the three in between are storehouses. The entire village consists of just seven houses and one building for community gatherings.
Highlights:
Easily reached in a private boat from Lombok, Komodo National Park is the only place in the world that you can see Komodo dragons in the wild. The population of lizards currently numbers around 5,700. Measuring up to 3 metres long and weighing up to 90 kg, they are not only the largest lizard species but also, in evolutionary terms, the oldest. Komodo National Park is a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Highlights:
A living relic of indigenous Balinese Aga culture, Tenangan village adheres to ancient traditions that pre-date Balinese Hinduism and Islam. Weavers, wood carvers and puppet makers abound, and when it comes to festival time, everyone is a musician or dancer. Tenangan village is just 2 hours by car from The Oberoi Beach Resort, Bali.
