Surwal Lake is approximately half an hour’s drive from Ranthambore’s best resorts, such as The Oberoi Vanyavilas Wildlife Resort. There is a pleasant walkway between the lake and farms that is best experienced at sunrise, when the birds are waking up. You can expect to see kingfishers, robins, geese, pelicans, egrets, hoopoe and many more. The Chambal River is home to India’s largest population of the critically endangered gharial. Characterised by its long thin jaws, the gharial is one of the largest living crocodilians, with males growing up to six metres long. Spot this interesting creature from a boat on the meandering river.
