Jakhoo Hill is one of the highest peak in Shimla city. Standing at 2,438 metres, it offers a different but equally fantastic perspective of the Himalayas to that which can be seen from Wildflower Hall. Jakhoo Hill is also home to an ancient temple and a towering statue of Lord Hanuman, the monkey god; a symbol of unwavering energy and devotion.
This tranquil hill station was a favourite of the Viceroy Lord Curzon, who not only designed India’s first 9-hole golf course here but also named his third daughter, Alexandra Naldehra, after it. Nowadays, Naldehra, at 2,195 metres above sea level, boasts a challenging golf course that is rated amongst the best in the country. For those more interested in trekking, Naldehra is also home to Shali Peak, whose hiking trail runs a steep 8 km to the summit for beautiful views.
Chail is best known for its cricket ground. Commissioned by the Maharaja of Patiala in 1893, it is the highest in the world at 2,444 metres above sea level. Nowadays, the cricket ground is used by the students at Chail Military School, a building also constructed by the Maharaja. During their vacations, the ground is transformed into a polo ground. Other notable attractions include Chail Palace, the Maharaja’s summer retreat, which boasts beautiful architecture, and Kali Ka Tibba Temple, which attracts Hindu pilgrims from across the globe and trekkers keen to take in views across the Shivalik Ranges.
Narkanda is perched at 2,469 metres above sea level on what used to be known as the Hindustan-Tibet highway and is surrounded by the Shivalik Ranges. During the summer months, Narkanda is the perfect base to hike to Hatu Peak (approximately one hour on foot) for panoramic mountain views from its hilltop temple. Located within the orchard region of the state of Himachal, you will also find freshly picked delicious apples and cherries for sale en route. During the winter, the area is transformed into an exciting skiing destination, with slopes for beginners and the experienced alike.
