Egypt's southernmost city, Aswan is located 240 kilometres along the River Nile from Luxor. At Aswan, the desert touches the banks of the Nile River and the waters are dotted with islands. Aswan was historically an important trading town and remains a bustling marketplace..
The Dendera temple complex spans 40,000 square metres on the banks of the Nile. Within the formidable mud brick wall lies the imposing Hathor temple; home to intriguing crypts, hand carved reliefs, beautifully painted ceilings and depictions of Cleopatra. The complex also boasts a sacred lake, shrines, towering gateways and a vast necropolis.
Karnak Temple lay buried under sand for more than 1,000 years before excavation work began in the mid 19th century. The huge task of restoring this five acre temple continues until today.
The ruined city of Thebes lies within the modern city of Luxor, on the eastern and western banks of the River Nile. Historically, Thebes was the ancient capital of Egypt; known for being minerally rich, situated at the crux of trade routes and host to a great many elaborate festivals. It was also home to a triad of Egyptian gods and a vast necropolis that includes royal cemetaries and funeral complexes.
