Agra is home to three UNESCO World Heritage sites; Mughal legacies from the 16th and 17th centuries.
A must-see when in India. The Taj Mahal is often described as “poetry in marble” and is the world’s most exquisite testimony to undying love. We recommend you visit the Taj at sunrise and sunset to witness the magical play of light, shadows and colours on the white marble minarets. A UNESCO World Heritage Site. Note: Taj Mahal is closed on Fridays.
Dating back to 1565 CE, Agra Fort is a formidable military structure that was transformed into a palace by Emperor Shah Jahan, who was later, ironically, imprisoned here when his son Aurangzeb seized power. Built out of red sandstone and white marble, the fort is enclosed by an insurmountable 20 metre high, 1.6 mile or 2.5 Kilometers double wall. A UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Fatehpur Sikri was built in 1571 CE and was the capital of the Mughal Empire for fourteen years. A fine example of a Mughal walled city, with well-defined public and private areas marked by imposing gateways, its architecture harmonises elements of traditional Hindu and Islamic styles. Fatehpur Sikri can also be visited en route to Jaipur. A UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Itmad-ud-Daulah, also known locally as “The Baby Taj”, was the first Mughal tomb to be built entirely of marble and pietra dura semi precious stone ornamentation. Embraced by a large garden with intersecting walkways and beautiful water bodies, it is a wonderful place to slow things down and enjoy a gentle stroll.
